A Brief History of Montreal
- Pre-1600sThe island is home to the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) village of Hochelaga, visited by French explorer Jacques Cartier in 1535. The site at the foot of Mont Royal has been inhabited for thousands of years and is also significant to the Algonquin peoples.
- 1642French colonists found Ville-Marie on 17 May 1642, a Catholic missionary settlement led by Paul de Chomedey de Maisonneuve. The settlement grows into Montreal, named after the prominent hill at its centre — Mont Royal.
- 1760–1867Britain seizes New France in 1760. Under British rule, Montreal flourishes as a fur-trade hub and becomes the commercial capital of Canada. In 1867, the British North America Act creates the Dominion of Canada, with Montreal as its largest and most prosperous city.
- 1876–1960sMontreal becomes a major industrial and financial centre, home to the Bank of Montreal — Canada's oldest chartered bank — and the headquarters of most Canadian railways. By the early 20th century, it is the economic capital of Canada, a position it holds until Toronto overtakes it in the 1970s.
- 1967 & 1976Montreal hosts the landmark Expo 67 World's Fair, welcoming over 50 million visitors and cementing its global reputation. Nine years later, the city hosts the 1976 Summer Olympics, the first held on Canadian soil, leaving behind the iconic Olympic Stadium.
- TodayMontreal is home to ~2.1 million residents and a CMA of ~4.3 million. It is Canada's cultural capital — the world's second-largest French-speaking city after Paris — and a global leader in artificial intelligence research (home to Mila, the world's largest academic AI research institute), aerospace, video game development, and film.
